Q Submit your Ethnicity Paper here. There is no need for a huge, fancy heading. Simply use the header function and place your name only at the top of your paper, Instructions - Each student is responsible for writing a 3-5 page essay examining his/her own ethnic background. You should discuss the following issues related to your ethnicity: • Description of your own ethnic background (it may be a mixture, such as Norwegian and Swedish, German and English, or Native American and African American, etc.; decide if you want to include more than one or just focus on one ethnic background). • History of "your people" coming to the United States; where they came from; when and why they came; the journey to this country, including any circumstances you consider significant. You may focus on your family's particular circumstances or the more general circumstances of others from your family's country of origin. • Reception of your people by other Americans: were there any immigration policies, restrictive or exclusionary policies which affected the opportunities of newcomers? Did they encounter any type of discrimination or encouragement in their local communities? • Aspects of that ethnic background that are salient or important to your family and you; what features, such as humor, the food, family relations, patterns of communication, etc. contribute to your way of thinking and being and those of others of your ethnic background? What strengths do you have that can be traced to your ethnic background? You may explore these issues in many ways; you can ask parents, grandparents, or relatives for their impressions or histories. You can use library research to find out not only about customs, but also about the official responses to your people coming to this country and the reaction of the new arrivals. Again, pay careful attention in the essay to style, grammar, and editing. You may, for example, consider taking drafts of your essay to the Writing Center.
